Alberta Farmers’ Markets
The May long-weekend marks the opening of a majority of seasonal farmers’ markets throughout the province of Alberta. Farmers’ Markets are a opportunity for Albertans to experience farm0fresh, local products and get a healthy head-start into the summer.
With the increasing trend towards healthy eating and the rising popularity of local diets, farmers’ markets are now more popular than ever. An important part of the province’s growing alternative agriculture sector, Alberta has more than 110 approved farmer’s markets, including 16 year-round, which offer a variety of high-quality, locally produced items. Often, these markets also offer consumers the unique opporutnity to directly meet the producers and see how products are grown, baked or made.
More than 3,000 vendors now offer a variety of products at Alberta’s farmers’ markets including: vegetables of different varieties, locally grown fruit, meat (fresh or frozen), eggs, honey, bedding plants, fresh flowers, baking, processed food products, artisan products and one-of-a-kind crafts.
All approved farmers’ markets display the Sunny Girl logo, indicating at least 80 per cent of their vendors produce their products locally within Alberta.
