Fire Hydrant – Flushing and Maintenance Program

Starting September 5, 2017 and continuing until completed, the Town of Vermilion Water Transmission and Distribution Department will be carrying out the Fall Hydrant Maintenance Program.

Each spring and fall we flush out the water lines to clear them of any sediment or mineral buildup in the lines. Water moves through the lines at a very slow rate, which allows sediment and mineral deposits to build up in the line. Flushing removes these deposits by forcing the water through the lines at a high pressure rate, and, then it is released through the fire hydrants. After flushing, the hydrants are inspected to ensure proper operation in the case of an emergency.

We flush the lines during business hours to minimize disruption to your service. During the flushing process, residents and businesses throughout Town may experience a drop in water pressure or some discoloration in the water if the hydrant in the area is opened. This discoloration or cloudy water is a result of air in the lines; it is safe to drink and should clear up by allowing water to run for a short period of time.
